“Squirrels helps young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it’s most needed.”
Scouts is an inclusive, values based movement
Inclusion is at the heart of our Squirrels story. Here at Scouts, we’re open to people of all genders, backgrounds, and faiths (including people of no faith). We’re committed to reaching out to new and different families and communities and include people who have never tried Scouts before.
That’s why we’re starting Squirrels in the places it’s needed most – our most underserved areas – so we can offer young people skills for life when and where they need them. We showed our impact in pilot groups in these places, and we’re proud to be prioritising support for Squirrels in underrepresented communities. This includes those from areas of deprivation and Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
As part of our commitment to inclusion, we’re keeping the cost of uniform (a single jumper) low, and we’ll be supplying uniforms at a discount to groups in underprivileged areas. All of the resources, including the badges themselves, have been tested for accessibility and religious and cultural suitability to make sure they’re suitable for everyone.
Every week, Squirrels will gather to grow and learn their way through lots of different games and activities
Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to – and they have lots of fun along the way.
The 45min sessions will be a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too.
Sessions will be packed with outdoors activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life. Of course, none of it would be possible without the support of the amazing leaders who plan and deliver such an inspiring programme.
All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure Scouting is safe and open to all. Some lead the Drey week in and week out. Others visit occasionally to help run a session or drop in to share their skills. No matter how much time you have to spare, find out about volunteering on your own terms.
Tuesday – 5.15pm – 6.00pm
Squirrels uniform consists of a red sweatshirt with your badges sewn on and a coloured scarf or ‘necker’ to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional accessories you can wear such as hats, hoodies, navy blue trousers or shorts, if you’d like to.
Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means you can run around and get messy without ruining your other clothes. It makes you feel part of a team. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out. And it gives you a place to show off all the brilliant badges you earn.
Purchase a jumper from the UK Scout website. Polo shirt is optional. Our Group scarf, woggle and badges are supplied by 1st Keynsham Scout Group at no cost.
